It was a great journey through Emma James’ Hell’s Bastard series. I have a little mixed feelings about the last book, hence “only” four stars, but it was a great book nonetheless. Finally, Whisper and Edge find their way to each other, something the reader has been waiting for through the first four books. A real plus point here, because I’m not a fan of insta-love, and Emma did a great job at making those two work real hard to find their happiness and overcome their past. As I already pointed out in my reviews for the other books, I love her writing style and the way she puts her thoughts into words. As an author who’s just starting out, I learned a lot from her. She has that “show, don’t tell” down to an art.
What annoyed me a bit were the repetitions. Something happens and is told from Edge’s POV, then Boxer (who made furious at some points with his constant concerns and his hate for Edge) tells the same story from his POV, and then you get to hear the same thing from Whisper again. It made the story drag sometimes and the book longer than necessary. One point deduction also for Emma’s struggle with quotation marks that are misplaced a lot in the book and seriously confused me at some points, but that’s just a matter of editing and has no impact on the story.
All things considered, I enjoyed the series and will put her other books on my to-read list 😉 Thanks Emma, for the entertainment!
