I loved the Steel & Stone series, and Annette Marie’s Spell Weaver series is just as great. I think I liked Book#2 even more than Book#1 because the ending was really great even if it again leaves you seriously cliffhanging!
Annette has such a great skill to build worlds and make the setting believable. I love how she created the “spell weaver profession”, and how she describes the different castes and worlds.
Everything she writes is so natural, it feels as if it’s just reality. Her writing style is simple but pretty, always accurate and to the point, and the editing is – as usual – absolutely flawless. I think what’s even better than Book#2 in this trilogy is the fact that Book#3 will be released soon, lol.
What was also pretty cool was how Annette managed to include Ash & Piper in the story, and how she describes Ash & Lyre’s relationship. Ever since reading the Steel & Stone series, you know that there’s some sort of comradeship between both Underworlders, but you also sense that they are not BFFs because Ash is just… well, Ash.
But what really blew me off guard was that, although they try to kill each other for whatever reasons, they don’t hate each other. Ash is, to some extent, Lyre’s most feared enemy, whereas on the other hand, he’s also his savior – this is absolutely brilliant because it shows that not every enemy or villain needs to be pure evil. It’s way more interesting if not everything is simply black and white. Ash is one of his many enemies, but he’s still likeable and his character melts easily with the Steel & Stone series.
Another plus point, especially for new readers – it doesn’t matter in which order you read the trilogies. Maybe the books are even better if you start with Spell Weaver first, who knows :)
